The SUNY Potsdam Arts Management program provides students with the principles and skills that prepare them for a lifetime of arts engagement as organizational and community leaders, schooled practitioners, and/or informed arts-supporters. This interdisciplinary study combines traditional business and communications administration with arts management, and establishes cross-curricular connections, which develop students as knowledgeable and practiced managerial leaders. Special attention is paid to students as arts entrepreneurs and to support pre-professional artists in the development of their creative careers. Career possibilities include: working as artists, within arts organizations, government and community service institutions, foundations, and the entertainment industry. In experiential classroom environments, student learn how the use of new media and digital technologies can provide innovative strategies for running effective businesses. Current trends and public policies in the arts field are explored, including the ways place making and creative economic development initiatives can deepen the impact of the arts in communities. Internship and practicum components apply student understanding through placements in accomplished local, regional, and national arts and cultural organizations. Finally, to support the importance of aesthetic appreciation and knowledge of the artistic process in managers, arts management minors are required to minor or major in one of the creative arts disciplines offered by the college.
