  • ENVR 320 - Policy & Protected Areas


    3 Credit(s)

    Conservation has long been taking place in protected areas of all varieties, from national parks and forests preserves to seashores and monuments. In this course we will look at both local and global protected areas and examine what policies have been successful conservation strategies and why. The course will use CIS, research, and discussion to create a project on a park of international importance. We will begin the course with a focus on the Adirondack State Park as a model for the world. Equivalent to POLS 303.

  • ENVR 340 - Environmental Justice Narratives


    3 Credit(s)

    This course examines the concept of environmental justice, as well as the associated concepts of environmental racism and radioactive colonization, through an interdisciplinary lens. The environmental justice narratives we find in literature, nonfiction, and documental films will introduce environmental studies students to the experiences of marginalized oppressed, and overlooked individuals and communities contending with and responding to environmental harm, which comes to bear on such communities disproportionately. An examination of these narratives will moreover demonstrate to students that nature is not only found in “wilderness,” but also in the places where many of us live and work, and revise our understanding of “environment” showing that nature exists in National Parks and nuclear waste sites, wild rivers and mega-dams, industrialized food production and the human body. Ultimately, this course will illuminate for students the reality that environmental harm always comes to bear on human lives and that environmental challenges are inseparable from social issues and concerns.

  • ENVR 350 - Sustainable Development


    3 Credit(s)

    This course explores economic systems that support sustainable development and allow human prosperity to occur within planetary environmental limits. Sustainable development is defined as, “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (UNCSD, Brutland Report) We are failing on both actions. We are not meeting the current needs of support for our own ecosystems and their human and nonhuman processes, and we are continually compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This course will examine a model of strong sustainability, which includes the practices that integrate economic and social systems within the ecological systems required to support and maintain life on the planet.

  • ENVR 360 - Equity and the Outdoors


    3 Credit(s)

    This course will introduce students to the concept of the “adventure gap,” which will illuminate the reality that individuals hailing from minority, indigenous, LGBTQIA, disabled and/or middle- and lower-class communities, among other marginalized communities, are underrepresented in outdoor recreation. In this course, we will investigate the ways in which majority communities have excluded marginalized individuals from the arena of outdoor and adventure recreation. We will, moreover, attend to shifting trends in contemporary outdoor recreation, wherein minority recreationalist and athletes are carving out a space for themselves in the able-bodied, white-male-dominated realm of outdoor recreation.

    This course (l) analyzes attempts to conceptualize environmental globalization from a variety of disciplines,
                       (ll) examines the elements of the global economy that most effect our one planet, and
                       (lll) assesses some of the complex consequences of the globalization of environmental issues across a range of challenges including the ecological commons, gender, and indigenous rights. Students in this course will attain an in-depth knowledge of key historical and contemporary debates in global environmental studies. Prerequisite: ENVR 110 or ENVR 120

    This course is the field experience for the Environmental Studies major. Each student will participate in a self-designed internship or field project with a non-profit or government organization. As a service-learning project, the field project will provide students with hands-on experience in the environmental field while providing service to the organization where they work.     A study of geology and the human environment. Topics begin with the basics of geology: minerals and rocks, the earth’s internal structure, earthquakes, volcanoes and plate tectonics. Surface processes affecting the environment include stream behavior and flooding, groundwater, and air pollution. The course examines laws governing the extraction and use of water, as well as energy sources and environmental concerns.     This is a survey course designed to describe the countless forms of organisms that have lived on the Earth since it formed 4.6 billion years ago. We will explore how and why those organisms evolved and why many went extinct, and also the ecological interactions between organisms with the physical environment.     This course focuses on (1) The identification, classification and study of minerals and mineral groups with an emphasis on crystal chemistry, symmetry, and the geologic conditions under which they form, and (2) the theory of light behavior in minerals and its application to study rocks and minerals in thin section using petrographic microscopes.     This course is intended as an introduction to the broad range of concepts and applications that fall under the sub-discipline of geochemistry. The course will be divided into sections. First, we will focus on the tools used in geochemistry then the application of those tools to a variety of questions in the ear sciences. Topics covered will include thermodynamics, acid and base equilibria, oxidation-reduction reactions, isotope systems, reactions in aquatic systems, weathering reactions, organic geochemistry, and major global geochemical cycles. This course will cover both high and low-temperature geochemistry, but there will be an emphasis on low-temperature systems. Fall.

    This course focuses on the origin and development of landforms created by fluvial, glacial, and alluvial processes. In addition, we explore the relationships of landforms to underlying geologic structures and the history of geologic and climatic changes that are recorded by surface features. Landscapes and surface processes are analyzed using air photos and topographic maps, as well as field mapping techniques and geographic information systems. Lab required. $100 lab fee assessed by Geology Department. Fall.

    This course will introduce students to current research in the geological sciences with the purpose of improving their writing and speaking skills. A common scientific theme will be explored throughout each semester. Reading, discussion, and critique of peer-reviewed publications will provide students with an understanding of the principles and conventions of scientific writing. Students will develop their speaking and writing through a series of weekly writing assignment, class discussions, and a research paper. A minimum of Junior standing required. Spring.

    Students will learn about the geology of Nova Scotia via a mandatory field trip (summer). Field trip involves strenuous hikes over irregular terrain in variable weather. Specific stops include the fossil forests of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs World Heritage Site, Triassic rift basin deposits (desert deposits, dinosaurs, and basalt flows), Mississippian lake deposits with some of the oldest terrestrial tetrapods, an upside down angular unconformity at Rainy Cove, and many others. Following the trip, students may complete a research project (GEOL 453 ) on one of the areas visited. Instructor permission required. As needed.

  • GEOL 453 - Geology of Nova Scotia - Research


    2 Credit(s)

    This course is the academic follow up to the Geology of Nova Scotia field trip. Students will build upon their field experiences and select a semester-long research topic related to one of the destinations visited on the summer field trip. Students will learn about the fundamentals of research and scientific writing in the geosciences via discussions and exercises that explore plagiarism, citation styles and conventions, the structure of research papers, the peer-review process, style and composition. Final projects include a fully-referenced review paper and a poster presentation.
