    This course is designed to help students develop ways of thinking about teaching and learning that will serve students throughout their career as music educators.     New York State boasts a rich heritage of opera from the Metropolitan, to Lake George, and Glimmerglass. Opera incorporates all of the performing and visual arts, as well as many other disciplines.   • @MUCE 418 - Directing Musical Theatre

    Directing Music Theatre is a course designed to explore the processes of directing musical theater for the stage. The major points of exploration will be: interpretation and analysis of form, concept development, script/score analysis, musical theater singing and instrumental considerations, basic stagecraft and directing as related to music theatre and production management within an educational setting. This course may be particularly helpful to music and theatre education majors who are typically charged with directing musical theater productions. You do not need to have previous directing experience, but having some aspect of participating in musical theater beyond a singer/actor/dancer will be helpful. Broad legal concepts such as separation of church and state, freedom of expression, search and seizure, due process, equal protection, discrimination, and tenure and dismissal will be examined through constitutional law, statues, case law and commissioner’s decisions.

    A seminar exploring computer, MIDI and Multimedia technology as it might be applied in a music education setting. The hands-on sessions in the Crane MIDI Lab will include the following: use of a generic office software for managing classroom records, tasks and class presentations; MIDI sequencing and auto-accompaniment generating software, and possible uses in music education; utilization of music notation software; introduction to multimedia programming for creating interactive classroom materials; and accessing and creating simple documents for the musical World Wide Web. Although prior knowledge of computer/ MIDI technology will be helpful, it is not required.

    Students will have to opportunity to diagnose and correct common mechanical problems of wind instruments in a hands-on setting. In addition to flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone, this class will cover percussion maintenance, with special attention to drum head replacement and tuning.

An overview of the history of wind instruments, reading and listening assignments, and biographical and historical information about each composer and his or her work.

    This “hands on” course is designed for the teacher with some or no experience with marching band. It will cover such topics as program development, teaching/rehearsal methods, marching fundamentals for parade, traditional style and competitive corps style marching, and an introduction into contemporary computer show design and charting techniques.

    Students will have the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge of the ultrasonic cleaning process of brass and woodwind instruments in a hands-on-setting, including instrument disassembly, Texas flushing, instrument reassembly, proper lubrication, ultrasonic cleaning machine maintenance, and environmental considerations. Through the cleaning process, students will develop skills to repair common maintenance issues associated with instrument disassembly and reassembly, such as stuck parts, dent repair, part alignment, soldering, French horn stringing, valve alignment, and consumables replacement.     This course provides a theoretical, practical, and analytical framework for understanding global music education. We will examine teaching strategies that acknowledge and make constructive use of cultural diversity. Among the topics explored will be various definitions of global music education, teachers’ values and behaviors in their work with culturally diverse populations, avoidance of stereotyping, and design of strategies and curricula that address themes of social justice.     Completion of a major research project in the field of music or music education. Working with a faculty adviser on a tutorial basis, the student will develop a proposal for a study which must be approved by faculty committee before the student embarks upon the project. The project culminates in the preparation of a written report of the research project (in thesis format) and an oral defense of the report before a faculty committee. The student will register for Thesis/Graduate Research Project each semester that the student is actively working on the project with the assistance of the adviser. A copy of the document becomes part of the College library.
