    3 Credit(s)

    This course explores the unique historical and methodological developments of the discipline of ethnomusicology. The course explores how and why ethnomusicologist do the work they do, and consider from an ethnographic perspective the myriad of ways in which people make music across the globe. Course topics many include music-cultures, tradition, ethnomusicology in the modern world, comparative musicology, European musical folklore, the anthropology of music, fieldwork practices, ethnography, ethics, music and politics, representation, virtual music, communities, musical advocacy, and work music pedagogy. The course will examine the history of fieldwork, and emphasize the practical skills necessary for engaging in fieldwork, which will culminate in student’s final ethnographic research projects.   • MUCH 461 - Gender & Music in Cross-Cultural Perspective


    3 Credit(s)

    This course explores the fascinating relationship between music and gender across the world, including how social, economic, and political circumstances influence gender roles and behavior, including an examination of representations of gender in various musical contexts. During the course, students will have the opportunity to consider how social institutions, media, and political organizations embrace, construct, subvert, and re-enforce gendered practices and identities. Major topics may include music and masculinity, gender performance, gender in jazz, re-gendering tradition, dance and the body, non-Western female composers, and gender in world music media and marketing. Fall.

  • MUCH 462 - Music, Culture, and Politics in West Africa


    3 Credit(s)

    This course examines the connections between music, culture, and politics in West Africa and allows students to gain an understanding of traditional and popular music and its significance in historical and contemporary perspective. Genres studied will likely include hiplife, juju, afrobeat, mbalax, and traditional Mande, Tuareg, Wolof, Ga. Akan, Vai, and Yoruba styles. Topics covered will likely include talking drums, organology, concepts of rhythm, European musical influences, the guitar, colonial and post-colonial politics, gender roles, performance practices, music and religion, music and nationalism, modes of transmission, and history and analysis of repertoire. Students will also engage with music though in-class workshops and demonstrations. Crane students only. As warranted.

    This course provides an introduction to a variety of musics in Africa, exploring how diverse people make and perform music on the continent and in the African diaspora. Through topical and regional case studies such as Shona mbira music, Anlo-Ewe drumming and dancing, and a type of Nigerian popular music known as jùjú, students will have the opportunity to become familiar with particular pieces of music and the contexts, instruments, forms, and practices surrounding them. Topics may include the role of music in African communities, the relationship between music and traditional ceremonies and rituals, the politics of music during the colonial and post-colonial periods, and the globalization of African music. Special attention will be paid to the political and ethical dimensions of music making in an increasingly global world.     This course serves as the capstone experience for students in the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree. The culminating project connects student’s coursework in the major, but may also include an interdisciplinary component, as warranted. Project examples could include: a performance, a written research project, a presentation-based research project, an internship, or other approved medium. Each of these projects requires completion and approval of the Capstone Project Proposal Form in the semester prior to enrollment. The project must also include a self-reflection component where students identify the links between the project and coursework, and explain how they grew personally, professionally, and intellectually as a result of the project.  As warranted
