    The student will have the opportunity to begin to develop collaborative skills essential for successful musical partnerships at the keyboard, including sight reading, sense of ensemble, process of rehearsing with vocalists and instrumentalists, communication on stage, and work on different styles of music.     This performance-based course is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to develop and improve their performing and professional skills as they relate to musical theatre repertoire. The students will explore and stage scenes from a variety of standard musical theatre repertoire, culminating with an end of the semester black box style performance in which costume, scenic, and lighting elements will not be included. The course is a required part of the Musical Theatre minor for music majors. Theatre and Dance majors in the Musical Theatre minor should register for DRAM 389 or DANC 389 respectively. Spring.

    Non-auditioning concert band for Crane music majors, Liberal Arts students, college faculty and staff, and community members who play wind, brass, percussion, electronic, keyboard, guitar, drum set, or non-traditional instruments. Weekly rehearsals on a variety of concert band music of different genres culminate in a final exam informal performance. All students collaborate in teams by designing, delivering, or assisting in music projects to investigate meaningful understandings of our chosen literature. The course is especially helpful for Crane music majors who wish to gain leadership experience utilizing the Curious, Collaborative Creativity (CCC) approach of instruction on secondary instruments.     In this course, students will learn to perform music from Ghana, Togo and neighboring countries of West Africa, culminating in a final performance for the Crane and Potsdam community at the end of the semester. Weekly rehearsals will focus on learning timeline patterns, drum patterns, song melodies, dance movements, foreign language texts, aural and listening skills, improvisation, and multiple-part playing associated with the selected repertoire.     An auditioned choral ensemble open to all students on campus who sing in the soprano and alto range. Several concerts are scheduled each semester. A commitment for both Fall and Spring semesters is expected. Students must also concurrently rehearse weekly and perform in Crane Chorus to fulfill the required ensemble credit. The purpose of Phoenix Club is to study the finest choral literature appropriate for a college level treble choir, and to perform at the highest level. The choir provides a musical and educational service to the campus and greater choral community. It fosters opportunities for student musical leadership and choral music education preparation.     This non-auditioned ensemble aims to develop a critical engagement with ensemble music making across a variety of genres and styles. Musicians will navigate critical questions regarding group performance such as “Which music will be performed?” “Why will we perform this music?” “Who does this music include/exclude?” “How will we perform this music?” “What do we need to know or want to find out in order to perform this music?” An openness to new musical opportunities, approaches, and ideas coupled with respectful, critical discourse are the central attributes of this ensemble and will be expected of all musicians. All students will play a critical role in helping shape the manner in which rehearsal and performances take place throughout the semester. Co-registration in MUAP 350 Crane Chorus is required.   • @MUAP 370 - Crane Wind Ensemble

    The Crane Wind Ensemble (CWE) includes approximately 56 musicians who perform as a full wind band and also in smaller chamber wind groups. The CWE comprises the most outstanding wind and percussion majors in the Crane School of Music who are selected by studio faculty through semesterly audition. The group is further augmented by members of the double bass, piano and harp studios as repertoire necessitates. This ensemble is dedicated to the performance of the finest wind repertoire, regardless of period or disposition of instrumental forces. The CWE is also dedicated to the music of our time, commissioning and premiering the latest works for wind band by contemporary composers. Flexible instrumentation and player rotation provide members of the ensemble with a variety of responsibilities, challenges, and playing experiences. In addition to tours, the CWE performs at least three programs per semester. As warranted.

    Composed of percussion students at The Crane School of Music, the Crane Percussion Ensemble specializes in the united performance of percussion instruments. The ensemble performs, in concert, music composed and written for percussion ensemble. The ensemble is a setting for learning literature representative of functional, aesthetic, and extremist styles of composition, as well as new music composed by today’s contemporary composers.     This ensemble is intended to provide an introduction to the musical styles and forms known as salsa. These genres and styles are investigated through performing a wide variety of musical compositions from the Latin and Latin jazz repertory. Fall and Spring.

    Viola Ensemble is a performance-based experience where students study and perform both works written for viola ensemble and works arranged for viola ensemble. Viola Ensemble strives to be inclusive in its choice of repertoire, seeking to highlight works by underrepresented composers as well as works from genres other than Classical whenever possible. It is open to all who wish to participate, though non-Crane majors must meet with the director before registering for the class. Viola Ensemble is a wonderful opportunity for orchestra track music education majors to practice a non-major instrument. Fall and Spring

    Offers students who are cast in the production and/or scenes workshop the opportunity to synthesize a variety of artistic, performing and expressive experiences that may greatly enhance their overall technical skills in music, singing, dramatic skills and movement. Productions are typically cast during the first week of each semester by competitive audition. A variety of repertoire continues to be explored from early and classical period opera, to operetta and contemporary genres (20thcentury opera and new works). A rigorous rehearsal schedule, participation in technical support aspects, and education outreach activities provide plentiful opportunities for deeper appreciation of all forms of fine and performing arts.     A non-auditioned choral ensemble for liberal arts students, college faculty and staff, community members and music majors. Quality literature representing the wide choral spectrum is studied and performed at one major concert each semester.     In this course, students will learn to perform music from Ghana, Togo and neighboring countries of West Africa, culminating in a final performance for the Crane and Potsdam community at the end of the semester. Weekly rehearsals will focus on learning timeline patterns, drum patterns, song melodies, dance movements, foreign language texts, aural and listening skills, improvisation, and multiple-part playing associated with the selected repertoire. No previous experience required. Fall and Spring.

    Permission of instructor required. This course will include weekly coaching sessions through the semester discussing and implementing elements of chamber music playing through an ensemble experience. Proper attention to intonation, blending, phrase shaping and performance etiquette will be addressed. Ensembles are expected to arrive at each coaching session prepared and having rehearsed a minimum of one time between coachings. Ensembles will perform at least once during the semester of the course. Fall and Spring.

    Open to percussion students and to those who successfully audition for the ensemble. The ensemble performs in concert standard literature representing the functional and aesthetic styles of compositions.     An auditioned choral ensemble open to all students on campus who sing in the soprano and alto range. Several concerts are scheduled each semester. A commitment for both Fall and Spring semesters is expected. Students must also concurrently rehearse weekly and perform in Crane Chorus to fulfill the required ensemble credit. The purpose of Phoenix Club is to study the finest choral literature appropriate for a college level treble choir, and to perform at the highest level. The choir provides a musical and educational service to the campus and greater choral community. It fosters opportunities for student musical leadership and choral music education preparation. Co-registration in MUAP 350  Crane Chorus is required. Fall and Spring.
