This course is a survey of the history and culture of the Viking Age. Description of the prehistory and geography of Europe will place Viking Age Scandinavia in context. Topics will concern religion, gender, slavery, warfare, economics, art and other cultural aspects of Viking societies. The final portion of the course will follow Viking expansion into European territories beyond Scandinavia, and beyond Europe, to North America.
