This course explores the fascinating relationship between music and gender across the world, including how social, economic, and political circumstances influence gender roles and behavior, including an examination of representations of gender in various musical contexts. During the course, students will have the opportunity to consider how social institutions, media, and political organizations embrace, construct, subvert, and re-enforce gendered practices and identities. Major topics may include music and masculinity, gender performance, gender in jazz, re-gendering tradition, dance and the body, non-Western female composers, and gender in world music media and marketing.
