MUCH 460 - Introduction to Ethnomusicology

This course explores the unique historical and methodological developments of the discipline of ethnomusicology. The course explores how and why ethnomusicologist do the work they do, and consider from an ethnographic perspective the myriad of ways in which people make music across the globe. Course topics many include music-cultures, tradition, ethnomusicology in the modern world, comparative musicology, European musical folklore, the anthropology of music, fieldwork practices, ethnography, ethics, music and politics, representation, virtual music, communities, musical advocacy, and work music pedagogy. The course will examine the history of fieldwork, and emphasize the practical skills necessary for engaging in fieldwork, which will culminate in student’s final ethnographic research projects. Prerequisite(s): MUCB 201 , MUCB 203 , and MUCB 204  with a minimum grade of 2.0.
