Sport and leisure activities are more than idle play. Cultures around the world have produced a wide variety of ways for people to relax, exercise and compete. Looking closely at these activities we may see how closely these seemingly simple games are tied to other aspects of a culture such as religion, economy or gender roles. We will look at the origins of a number of games, past and present, from around the world, learn the rules that govern them, how they have changed and discuss how they reflect many facets of the cultures in which they take place.
