Gen Ed: XC credit. ANTH 165 – Language and Magic (3) An introduction to the anthropological study of ritual language and magic, this course examines linguistic practices and their intersections with various systems of spiritual beliefs around the world. The course introduces students to the anthropological study of magic, spirituality, and witchcraft. We focus on various forms of ritual language which include the language of spells and incantations, the language of divination, trance and possession speech. Examples are drawn from a variety of cultures around the world, drawing extensively on Latin America, and including examples for other areas such as Africa, Europe, and Asia. Fall.
