INDS 209 - Introduction to Native Studies


3 Credit(s)

This course will introduce students to the field of Native/Indigenous Studies, a growing field of interdisciplinary interest  in the United States and Canada focused on Native American and First Nation populations. Students will be introduced to some of the major concerns of the field, which can include but are not limited to: settler colonialism in North America, native survivance and cultural expression (language, the arts, etc.), the politics of tribal sovereignty, and Indigenous ways of knowing. In addition to the thematic issues addressed by the course, students will also be introduced to methodological and pedagogical practices that have been developed by Indigenous communities, which can include but are not limited to: professional writing practices, museum curatorial practices, and classroom pedagogical practices.
