CHEM 320 - Environmental Analysis

1 or 3 Credit(s)

Due to the massive industrialization, human population expansion, and the need for agricultural production growth, the pollution levels keep increasing. Extensive studies of the deleterious effects of many pollutants on human health have led to the efforts to develop new methods of evaluating pollution levels and to institute stricter mechanisms for controlling the discharge of pollutants to the environment. This course is designed to provide a broad survey ofthe field of environmental analysis, combining the methods of sample collection and preparation, with the utilization of modern instrumental methods of chemical analysis for pollutants ranging from heavy metals, arsenic, and chromates, through acid rain and sulfur-com pounds poisoning, to carcinogens and endocrine disruptors, including PCBs and dioxins.
