ENVR 350 - Sustainable Development

3 Credit(s)

This course explores economic systems that support sustainable development and allow human prosperity to occur within planetary environmental limits. Sustainable development is defined as, “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (UNCSD, Brutland Report) We are failing on both actions. We are not meeting the current needs of support for our own ecosystems and their human and nonhuman processes, and we are continually compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. This course will examine a model of strong sustainability, which includes the practices that integrate economic and social systems within the ecological systems required to support and maintain life on the planet. Sophomore standing required. Not recommended during the first year.
