MUCH 421 - Music Gender Sexuality Post 1800 3 Credit(s)
Music, Gender, and Sexuality, post-1800 is a course for students who wish to explore interfaces between fundamental aspects of human culture and identity - music, gender, and sexuality. Certain basic qualities of gender strongly resemble basic qualities of music - each is a kind of performance and each is intrinsically embodied. Starting from this fundamental tension-in-common, we will explore the binaries that constrain our thinking about gender, as well as the intersections of gender and music with sex, social class, and race through their manifestations in a range of Western European and American musics after 1800. Music major students only.
Prerequisite(s): MUCH 201 And MUCH 202 And MUCH 323 with a minimum grade of 2.0.
