MUCT 441 - Analyzing Musical Theater Song

This course introduces students to various analytical approaches and scholarship to engage with Musical Theater song. We begin with a brief review of harmonic analysis and various compositional techniques traditionally used to signify relationships between music and text. After establishing a framework for intertextual analysis, students are introduced to motivic, lyric, modulatory, and rhythmic methods of analysis to understand issues of musical structure and compositional intent.

Prerequisite(s): MUCT 203 with a 2.0 or higher OR MUCB 203 with a 2.0 or higher.
