The Literature/Writing major is required of all students seeking secondary education certification (in conjunction with a teacher certification program in the School of Education and Professional Studies). Courses focus on literature, rhetoric, creativity, and professional practice while introducing students to common forms in a variety of contexts.

Department Core: 10-11 Credits
Literature Core: 9 Credits
Advanced Courses: 22 Credits
Literature Perspective
At least two of these three courses must be at the 400-500 level. Students may select from a limited number of courses designated by the literature faculty.
One must cover literature before 1900 and one after.
American literature: one upper division course
British literature: one upper division course
World literature: one upper division course
Communication Perspective
Note(s)
- Ordinarily, no more than two courses may be used to satisfy the requirements for both the English and the Communication majors. No more than 6 credits in the minor can be used to satisfy other college major or minor requirements. No more than one online course and no more than one reduced-time course (e.g. Winter or Summer Session course lasting fewer than six weeks) may be used to satisfy the requirements for the major. A minimum grade of 2.0 is required for all courses counted toward the major, minor, or specialization.
