General Education Requirements
Candidates for the B.M. degree must satisfy the General Education requirements described below. Information for each specific degree program and degree sequence sheets can be found here: https://www.potsdam.edu/the-quad/resources/crane-student-resources/degree-programsadvising (click on “Current Crane Students” and then “Degree Plans” and select the Academic Year for the year the student entered college).
The liberal arts courses and other College requirements must be distributed as follows:
General Education Foundations: 7 Credits Minimum
Communication Experience: 4 Credits
[FW] First-Year Writing (1 course)
Quantitative Experience: 3 Credits
[FM] First-Year Mathematics (1 course)
Critical Thinking Experience:
FC courses can double count for another General Education requirement or Liberal Arts Elective.
[FC] Critical Thinking (1 course)
The Modes of Inquiry: 9 Credits
*No more than eight credits taken in Crane may be applied to the Modes of Inquiry. As the WC, AE, and AC requirements are met by required music courses, most students take the XC outside of Crane. If a student wanted to use an XC course within Crane, they would need to take 3 credits of WC/AH or three credits of AC outside of Crane.
Scientific Inquiry [SP] or [SB]: 3 Credits
Physical or Biological (1 course)
A laboratory experience (1 credit) is optional, but not required
Social Analysis [SA]: 3 Credits

*Western Civilization [WC] or American History [AH]: 3 Credits
Requirement (1 course) met through the music curriculum
*Cross-Cultural Perspective [XC]: 3 Credits
(1 course)
Requirement must be taken outside of music unless AC or WC is being fulfilled by a non-music course.
*Aesthetic Experiential [AE]: 2 Credits
Requirement (1 course) met through the music curriculum.
*Aesthetic Critical [AC]: 3 Credits
Requirement (1 course) met through the music curriculum.
Language Proficiency: 3 Credits
Requirement (1 course) must be met as defined by SUNY Potsdam. See General Education Manual for more information. Modern Language courses are counted as liberal arts electives.
Physical Education/Health and Wellness (PE/HW): 1-2 Credits
2 experiences. See General Education section.
Total Credit Hours Required: 17-18
Basic Musicianship Sequence: 29 Credits Required for Bachelor of Music Degrees
Students with a studio emphasis in piano are exempt from the two Keyboard Skills courses.
Upper Division Music Theory and History Electives: 21 Credits
Instrumentation, Orchestration, or Arranging Elective 3 Credits *
Counterpoint Elective 3 Credits
Jazz, Pop, Ethnomusicology Elective 3 Credits
Theory/Analysis Elective 3 Credits (Must be non-jazz/pop. MUCT 301 , MUCT 302 , MUCT 330 cannot be used to fulfill this requirement.)
Music History Elective 3 Credits (Any upper-level MUCH course except those that would satisfy the Jazz, Pop, Ethnomusicology category.)
Free Upper Division Music History or Theory Electives 6 Credits
Composition Track: 55 Credits
Studio Lessons
8 semesters @ 3 credits
Non-Music Liberal Arts Electives: 12 Credits
Note(s)
- Students are accepted for admission who demonstrate by audition the potential to accomplish Level A in area of applied study by the end of the fourth semester. If the Level A is not satisfactorily completed by the end of the fourth semester, a change of applied area or curriculum may be recommended.
- The minimum performance requirement for the major in Musical Studies is satisfactory completion of Level A and the performance of a ten-minute or 30-minute recital.
- To transfer into this degree program from another major or from another institution, and to remain in the program beyond the sophomore year, it is necessary to have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 and an average of 3.0 in the following courses in the Musicianship Core sequence as they are completed: MUCB 101 , MUCB 102 , MUCB 103 , MUCB 104 , MUCB 105 , MUCB 106 , MUCB 201 , MUCB 202 , MUCB 203 , MUCB 204 , MUCB 205 , MUCB 206 , MUCB 323 , MUCP 209 , MUCP 309 .

- the Composition Sophomore Evaluation, and
- the capstone portfolio and performance requirement.
