General Education Requirements
Candidates for the B.M. degree must satisfy the General Education requirements described below. Information for each specific degree program and degree sequence sheets can be found here: https://www.potsdam.edu/the-quad/resources/crane-student-resources/degree-programsadvising (click on “Current Crane Students” and then “Degree Plans” and select the Academic Year for the year the student entered college).
The liberal arts courses and other College requirements must be distributed as follows:
General Education Foundations: 7 Credits Minimum
Communication Experience: 4 Credits
[FW] First-Year Writing (1 course)
Quantitative Experience: 3 Credits
[FM] First-Year Mathematics (1 course)
Critical Thinking Experience:
FC courses can double count for another General Education requirement or Liberal Arts Elective.
[FC] Critical Thinking (1 course)
The Modes of Inquiry: 9 Credits
*No more than eight credits taken in Crane may be applied to the Modes of Inquiry. As the WC, AE, and AC requirements are met by required music courses, most students take the XC outside of Crane. If a student wanted to use an XC course within Crane, they would need to take 3 credits of WC/AH or three credits of AC outside of Crane.
Scientific Inquiry [SP] or [SB]: 3 Credits
Physical or Biological (1 course)
A laboratory experience (1 credit) is optional, but not required
Social Analysis [SA]: 3 Credits

*Western Civilization [WC] or American History [AH]: 3 Credits
Requirement (1 course) met through the music curriculum
*Cross-Cultural Perspective [XC]: 3 Credits
(1 course)
Requirement must be taken outside of music unless AC or WC is being fulfilled by a non-music course.
*Aesthetic Experiential [AE]: 2 Credits
Requirement (1 course) met through the music curriculum.
*Aesthetic Critical [AC]: 3 Credits
Requirement (1 course) met through the music curriculum.
Language Proficiency: 3 Credits
Requirement (1 course) must be met as defined by SUNY Potsdam. See General Education Manual for more information. Modern Language courses are counted as liberal arts electives.
Physical Education/Health and Wellness (PE/HW): 1-2 Credits
2 experiences. See General Education section.
Total Credit Hours Required: 17-18
Non-Music Liberal Arts Electives: 8 Credits

Basic Musicianship Sequence: 29 Credits Required for Bachelor of Music Degrees
Students with a studio emphasis in piano are exempt from the two Keyboard Skills courses, but will take @MUCC 303 regardless of track.
Music Electives: 3 Credits
(limit one ensemble per semester)
Upper Division Music History or Theory Elective: 3 Credits
Upper Division Music Education Elective: 3 Credits
Required Courses for State Certification
Orchestra Track: 60 Credits

Technical/Professional Courses
Note(s)
- Students are accepted for admission who demonstrate by audition the potential to accomplish Level A in area of applied study by the end of the fourth semester. If the Level A is not satisfactorily completed by the end of the fourth semester, a change of applied area or curriculum may be recommended.
- The minimum performance requirement for the major in Music Education is satisfactory completion of Level A and the performance of a 30-minute recital.
- To enter the Music Education program, SUNY requires entering students have a 3.0 or better GPA coming in. The GPA considered will be the most recent GPA, achieved prior to entering the program. This will either be the overall high school GPA, the overall GPA from another college (two- or four-year) for transfer students, or overall SUNY Potsdam GPA for current SUNY Potsdam students.
- To remain in the Music Education program, it is necessary to have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.5 and a 3.0 music GPA.
