Africana Studies Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs of Study

Africana Studies is an academic program that focuses on the political, economic, cultural, and social experiences of African peoples in an attempt to illuminate the connectedness of the human experience. The minor in Africana Studies is structured from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. It is designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to understand the socio-economic, political, and psychological institutions, practices, and cultural constructions, both contemporary and historical, that affect the contemporary experience of race and ethnicity in America and elsewhere. The minor’s focus on the life experiences of blacks (i.e., Africans as well as those peoples outside of Africa, including the Americas, who are descendants of Africans) will help to deepen students’ understanding of the United States and the world.
