The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Chemistry provides an excellent foundation for a career in science, science education, technology or medicine. A SUNY Potsdam B.S. degree in Chemistry meets all of the requirements for an American Chemical Society (ACS) certified degree and is designed to prepare students for admission into graduate schools in chemistry, medical schools, professional positions in industry, the health field or governmental agencies. Students learn about all major fields within chemistry such as inorganic, organic, analytical, biological and physical chemistry, and they are exposed to modern laboratory techniques and equipment. The research component of the B.S. in chemistry program allows students to gain the first-hand experience of working in cutting-edge techniques and research projects. Students frequently present their work at professional chemistry conferences and see their work published in scientific journals.
Program Student Learning Outcomes:
Chemistry B.S. students will be able to:
• describe the major concepts and theoretical principles in chemistry.
• solve basic problems in chemistry efficiently and accurately.
• execute basic experiments, applying instrumentation and fundamental laboratory methodologies.
• design and complete research projects, inclusive of recording, analyzing, and interpreting data.
• produce a research poster, oral presentation, or research paper based on the results of one’s work, to communicate with chemists and non-chemists.
