Music Business, B.M.


The Bachelor of Music degree in Music Business program works closely with the Crane Institute for Music Business to provide the most comprehensive preparation for employment in the music industry. The program is designed for students who want to earn a place in the music business industry. We provide the preparation for employment in the music products industry, arts administration, the recording industry, and other fields.

The degree combines the elements of our strong Bachelor of Music with coursework tied into the Department of Business Administration. We provide you with a solid foundation both in music and performance as well as knowledge about what makes the industry tick. Our faculty are true experts in audio technology, music retail, music production and music product development.

Program Student Learning Outcomes:

Music Business B.M. students will be able to:

   • notate a newly encountered melody accurately and efficiently.
   • demonstrate competency in musical performance.
   • demonstrate knowledge of pivotal historical events, societal attitudes, aesthetic and artistic trends, and to identify their interrelationship with music.
   • demonstrate the ability to communicate about both business and musical concepts in a professional setting.

Program Requirements


Basic Musicianship Sequence: 29 Credits Required for Bachelor of Music Degrees


Students with a studio emphasis in piano are exempt from the two Keyboard Skills courses.

 

Performance: 21-23 Credits


Guitar majors in this degree will take seven semesters (7 cr) of ensembles, four of which must be Guitar Ensemble, taken in any semester they choose. For all others, four of the seven required semesters of ensemble must be Major Ensembles, taken during the student’s first two years.

  • Students are accepted for admission who demonstrate by audition the potential to accomplish Level A in area of applied study by the end of the fourth semester. If the Level A is not satisfactorily completed by the end of the fourth semester, a change of applied area or curriculum may be recommended.
  • The minimum performance requirement for the major in Music Business is satisfactory completion of Level A and the performance of a ten-minute or 30-minute recital.
  • To transfer into this degree program from another major or from another institution, and to remain in the program, it is necessary to have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0.
  • Bachelor of Music majors do not take WAYS 301 in the Pathways general education program.
  • A grade of 2.0 or higher is required in each music course in order for it to count toward a major in music. In courses that are sequential, a grade of 2.0 or higher is required for the student to advance to the next course in the sequence.
