The Bachelor of Arts degree in Music is the only liberal arts degree in music that The Crane School of Music offers. Unlike the Bachelor of Music degrees, this program allows students to combine music study with a broad-based liberal arts education. Students in the B.A. in Music degree often are looking to combine music with study in at outside field.
Program Student Learning Outcomes:
Music B.A. students will be able to:
• notate a newly encountered melody accurately and efficiently.
• demonstrate competency in musical performance.
• demonstrate knowledge of pivotal historical events, societal attitudes, aesthetic and artistic trends, and to identify their interrelationship with music.
• demonstrate the ability to synthesize and reflect upon their musical experiences.

Basic Musicianship Sequence: 27 Credits
Students with a studio emphasis in piano are exempt from the two Keyboard Skills courses.
Performance: 12 Credits
Ensembles must be taken during the student’s first two years. Guitar Majors in this degree will take four semesters (4 cr.) of Guitar Ensemble. For all others the four semesters of ensemble must be Major Ensembles.
Upper Division Music History or Theory Electives: 6 Credits
Music Electives: 10 Credits
Capstone Project: 1 Credit

- Students are accepted for admission who demonstrate by audition the potential to accomplish Level A in area of applied study by the end of the fourth semester. If the Level A is not satisfactorily completed by the end of the fourth semester, a change of applied area or curriculum may be recommended.

A grade of 2.0 or higher is required in each music course in order for it to count toward a major in music. In courses that are sequential, a grade of 2.0 or higher is required for the student to advance to the next course in the sequence.

B.A. Music majors must complete at least 70 credit hours of non-music coursework, 90 credits of liberal arts coursework, and 120 total credit hours to complete the degree.
