The Art Education major prepares students for certification to teach art from grades Pre-K through 12. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average at the time of admittance and maintain that average throughout their time in the program. Placement is conducted through the School of Education and Professional Studies at Potsdam. A portfolio review is not required to enter the program.
Program Student Learning Outcomes:
Art Education B.F.A. students will be able to:
• develop the necessary dispositions to be a reflective practitioner of art education.
• consistently use effective assessment tools to evaluate student learning.
• exhibit the ability to communicate an understanding of the importance of the arts in society and in arts education.
• demonstrate a basic knowledge of art history.

Student Teaching for Art Education Candidates
- Students who successfully complete the program will achieve New York State Initial Certification in Art Education. Student teaching is a college-supervised experience in participating schools in New York State.
- Since the student teaching experience is considered a full-time commitment, the following regulations apply:
- No simultaneous coursework is permitted during the student teaching assignment.
- Any employment during the student teaching assignment must be approved by the Sponsor Teacher and the Student Teaching Supervisor, and notification given to the Coordinator of Art Education.
- Any volunteer activities that could interfere with the student teaching assignment must be approved by the Sponsor Teacher and the Student Teaching supervisor, and notification given to the Coordinator of Art Education
- Student Teaching in Art is a full semester course consisting, in most cases, of two distinctly different teaching experiences. These experiences must include contact with elementary students (PK-6) and secondary students (7-12).
- Art Education majors cannot have an Art Studio minor
- Art Education majors can double major in Visual Arts (BFA) or Graphic Design & New Media (BFA). One degree is awarded for double majors with the same degree type.
- Students may not elect the S/P/U grade option for any course in the major. A minimum of a 2.0 grade is needed in each course.
