Music Business, B.S.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Music Business program is designed for students who want to earn a place in the music business industry, and prepares students for employment in music, music business, and business fields, such as the music products industry, the recording industry, arts administrative positions, and entertainment law, among others. The degree combines instruction in foundational music skills, with flexible options within music study, music business specific courses, and coursework in business through the Department of Business Administration. The degree provides students with both musical skills and knowledge along with an up-to-date understanding of, and hands-on experiences in, the music industry.

The Crane School of Music also offers a Music Business, B.M.  

Program Student Learning Outcomes:

Music Business B.S. students will be able to:

  • apply foundational knowledge of music notation in an expressive musical performance.
  • ​analyze and evaluate a music business case study.
  • to identify and define basic principles music business law.
  • demonstrate the ability to communicate about both business and musical concepts in a professional setting.

Performance: 6 credits

Music History & Music Theory: 14 credits


Note(s)


  • Entry to the B.S. Music Business major requires a demonstration of musicality and an interview with the program head. Contact the Crane School of Music for more information.
  • A grade of 2.0 or higher is required in each major-required course in order for it to count towards the major. In courses that are sequential, a grade of 2.0 or higher is required for the student to advance to the next course in the sequence.
