The Musical Studies - Music Theory and Music History degree tracks allow students to focus on the scholarly study of music. Students focus on any area with musicology, ethnomusicology or musical analysis. Through the breadth and depth gained as a result of undergraduate research, students are better prepared to apply to graduate schools, become effective music educators, or pursue an advanced performance degree. As a capstone experience, students pursue their own research of a topic of choice with a faculty advisor. Musical Studies majors may pursue a variety of careers, including working in higher education, librarianship, publishing or music criticism.
Program Student Learning Outcomes:
Musical Studies-Music History B.M. students will be able to:
• notate a newly encountered melody accurately and efficiently.
• demonstrate competency in musical performance.
• demonstrate knowledge of pivotal historical events, societal attitudes, aesthetic and artistic trends, and to identify their interrelationship with music.
• formulate original ideas, using critical thinking, to communicate the relationship of music and culture.
Musical Studies-Music Theory B.M. students will be able to:
• notate a newly encountered melody accurately and efficiently.
• demonstrate competency in musical performance.
• demonstrate knowledge of pivotal historical events, societal attitudes, aesthetic and artistic trends, and to identify their interrelationship with music.
• formulate original ideas and apply critical thinking to analytical methods to explain and communicate their musical experiences.

Basic Musicianship Sequence: 29 Credits Required for Bachelor of Music Degrees
Students with a studio emphasis in piano are exempt from the two Keyboard Skills courses.
Upper Division Music Theory and History Electives: 21 Credits

Two semesters of Functional Keyboard courses, as appropriate for student’s major instrument

- Applied Composition Elective 3 Credits (MUCT 416 , MUCT 411 , or MUCT 412 )

Note(s)
- Students are accepted for admission who demonstrate by audition the potential to accomplish Level A in area of applied study by the end of the fourth semester. If the Level A is not satisfactorily completed by the end of the fourth semester, a change of applied area or curriculum may be recommended.
- The minimum performance requirement for the major in Musical Studies is satisfactory completion of Level A and the performance of a 30-minute recital.
- To transfer into this degree program from another major or from another institution, and to remain in the program beyond the sophomore year, it is necessary to have a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 and an average of 3.0 in the following courses in the Musicianship Core sequence as they are completed: MUCC 111 , MUCC 112 , MUCT 103 , MUCT 104 , MUCT 105 , MUCT 106 , MUCT 203 , MUCT 204 , MUCT 205 , MUCT 206 ,MUCH 201 , MUCH 202 , MUCH 323 , MUCP 209 , MUCP 309 .
- Details about specific ensemble requirements can be found in the Crane Student Handbook and are dependent on the student’s instrument and track.
- A grade of 2.0 or higher is required in each music course in order for it to count toward a major in music. In courses that are sequential, a grade of 2.0 or higher is required for the student to advance to the next course in the sequence.
- Bachelor of Music majors are exempt from the college physical education/health and wellness requirement.
